Leave the hustle and bustle of big cities behind and check out some of North America’s least-visited camping locations. These gorgeous, but underrated destinations across the U.S. and Canada are the perfect places to escape the crowds in an RV rental this year.

Bozeman, Montana

*Population: Less than 45,000
Hundreds of miles of mountain trails, pristine alpine lakes and several rivers allow for year-round outdoor adventure. Surrounded by the Gallatin National Forest, Bozeman is a nature lover’s paradise. It’s no wonder it’s been ranked one of the top towns for outdoor recreation and featured in magazines like Outside, National Geographic Adventure and Fly Rod and Reel.

Squamish, British Columbia, Canada  

*Population: Less than 20,000 
This is the spot for thrill-seeking RV travelers. From rainforest excursions and mountain biking to rock climbing and epic kiteboarding, Squamish has it all. The town’s motto – hardwired for adventure – is spot on! Located less than an hour from both Vancouver and Whistler, it’s been called the place the ocean meets the mountains and the town’s stunning views do not disappoint.  

Sun Valley, Idaho 

*Population: less than 1,500
A prime destination to spend a day casting a line in search of the native Idaho trout, there are several incredible lakes and rivers near this small town. With nearly 300 days of sunshine this is a fly fisher’s dream. White water rafting is popular among tourists and many of the adventure companies also offer family-friendly floats. Hiking this part of the country is another great outdoor option and can be a really beautiful experience, especially when the abundant wildflowers are blooming. Skip the hotels and opt for an RV rental in Boise instead. 

Tobermory, Ontario, Canada 

*Population: Less than 1,500
Tobermory is all about beaches and water adventure. Considered the freshwater scuba capital of the world, snorkel and dive enthusiasts love to explore the multiple, underwater shipwrecks in the area. The small community, located on the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, offers visitors fresh air, pristine beaches with turquoise waters and generous forest landscapes. Jackson Hole, Wyoming 

*Population: Less than 11,000
Because of its location, Jackson Hole is often used as a basecamp for those traveling to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park, but it’s definitely worth exploring on its own. Hiking, backpacking, RV camping and horseback riding are just a few of the best outdoor adventures Jackson Hole has to offer. The town also offers great fishing and river rafting. 

Nelson, British Columbia, Canada 

*Population: less than 11,000 
Located alongside Kootney Lake, this small town in B.C. is known for promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. Whether you hit the lake for kayaking or the trails for mountain biking, Nelson is a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts and RV camping. Fun fact: the area is a hot spot for bird watching and is home to more than 150 different species including Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons.  

So pack up your RV rental vehicle and get started planning your next getaway. Sometimes the road less traveled is the best way to find a new favorite camping destination.
