Billings RV rentals by Cruise America make it easy to explore the area in comfort and class. You needn`t stray far from the town to find some fun and interesting things to see and do. Because of the extreme diversity of the region, you can visit everything from mountains to canyons, historical sites to modern adventure. Here are a few ideas for those seeking great scenery and fun activities in a rental motorhome from the Billings area:
Pompey`s Pillar National Monument: Just east of Billings off of Interstate 94, travelers can visit Pompey`s Pillar. It overlooks the Yellowstone River about 25 miles east of Billings. It is easily accessible from Interstate 94, using exit 23, or from State Highway 312. The pillar is an intriguing historical spot because it displays physical evidence of the expedition by Lewis and Clark. While on the return route, a travel party headed by Clark was separated from the rest of the group so they could follow the Yellowstone River. While on this adventure, William Clark carved his name and the date on a sandstone rock formation. He named the formation after Sacagawea`s son, Pompey (the child`s nickname) and called it Pompey`s Pillar. It is now an historical monument. If you`re a history buff, you don`t want to miss this. It costs $7.00 per vehicle, per day. Visitors may walk in 365 days a year, from dawn to dusk. It’s only a one-mile walk from the parking lot to the pillar. You may drive into the park May through September, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument: From Billings you can take your rental motorhome onto I-90 to the Crow Agency Exit 510 at Jct 212 to Battlefield Tour Road 756, and you will arrive at this monumental location. This is the site of one of the most notorious battles of the 19th century Indian wars. It was in this battle that Lt. Col. George Custer, along with 263 U.S. Army soldiers fought thousands of Lakota and Cheyenne warriors on June 25-26 of 1876. There is a self-guided tour available for visitors to the battlefield. The energy of the conflict can still be felt in the air. During the summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day) the park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In the spring (April 1 – Memorial Day) the park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The fees are $15 per car.
Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area: 95 miles out of Billings, Montana is a town called Fort Smith. This is where the 120,000-acre Bighorn Canyon National Recreation area begins. It actually extends over 70 miles down into Wyoming. Here you will find great RV camping, as well as outdoor recreation of all varieties. Enjoy fishing, boating, hiking and wildlife watching in a beautiful environment, compliments of Mother Nature. She provides a landscape of sheer cliffs that tower 1,000 feet over a ribbon of brilliant blue water. The Lovell, Wyoming visitor center offers campfire talks most Fridays and Saturdays at the Horseshoe Bend campground amphitheater. The hours of the various park’s visitor centers vary, depending on the time of the year, and the available staffing. Keep in mind that the visitor center is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.
Red Lodge Mountain: Known as the Gateway to Yellowstone Park, Red Lodge Mountain is full of charm and beauty. It’s the kind of place that feels like home from the very moment you arrive. Just an hour`s drive from Billings, you will find yourself amongst the foothills of the majestic Bighorn Mountains. Downtown is a "feel good" experience with its unique shops and eateries nestled in quaint, historic buildings. While there you can see the Carbon County Historical Society and Museum, as well as the Beartooth Nature Center. From Billings, drive your Cruise America RV on Interstate 90 west to exit 434 (Laurel, MT). Follow Highway 212 west about 46 miles to the city of Red Lodge. Continue through the town and make a right turn at the Red Lodge Mountain sign onto West Fork Rd/Ski Run Road. Follow Ski Run road to the right at the fork, which is six miles further.
