Take a long-deserved break and venture in and around the "Windy City" in one of the many Chicago RV rentals available from Cruise America. We have a conveniently located rental center in the O'Hare/Chicago area. Shop and dine at hundreds of locations along the Magnificent Mile, or take a ride on the grand Ferris wheel at Navy Pier, which happens to be a landmark of the region. You can explore eons of historical artifacts and displays as you walk through the Museum Campus, home to three of Chicago’s most popular museums and aquarium. You can spend hours seeing the sights of the big city, including some of the world’s tallest buildings.
If you would like to cruise outside the city and take an interesting day trip, here is an idea:
If you happen to be a connoisseur of wine or a fan of gorgeous landscape, how about taking a jaunt just a couple hours east of Chicago on I-94 to the vineyards of southwest Michigan? There are more miles of coastline in this state than in any other state in the U.S., and that makes for the perfect winemaking climate in many of its regions. To get there in an easy fashion, just point your rental motorhome in the direction of St. Julian Winery in Paw Paw, Michigan. This winery sits just a half-mile north of Exit 60 on I-94. There are more than 40 different wines, sparkling juices and spirits produced at this 90-year-old winery. St. Julian has a rich history, and still produces some of the long-time favorites, such as Sholom Kosher Wine and the award-winning Solera Cream Sherry. It’s open all week, and the hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. They are closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and they close at 3:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
For a fruitier, more farm-oriented visit, you can head to Lehman's Orchard in Niles, Michigan, just 60 miles further on I-94 West. This winery uses the very fruit grown on the premises to make the cherry, blueberry, peach, pear and apple wines and hard ciders they are famous for. They also offer tree-ripened fruit, dried fruit, trail mixes and fresh nuts. It’s open all week, and the hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you plan on visiting on a holiday, check to be sure they are open before you go.
If you'd rather visit a smaller, quainter Michigan winery, there is Fenn Valley, where you can take a wine making tour that is offered year-round. You can see how world-class wine is made from the grapes grown right there on the property. The tours go into depth, lasting about one hour and forty-five minutes. They involve wine tasting throughout, in order to illustrate the various points being discussed. Oh, and good news … if you are hungry, there are tours that involve food as well! And best of all, when the tour is done, you can crawl into your RV rental and take a nice long recovery nap! Fenn Valley is open all week, and the hours are Monday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. They are closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and they close at 2:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
