Anchorage RV rentals provided by Cruise America are the perfect way to explore the ceaseless scenery of the area. As the biggest state in America, it would take a very long vacation to cover everything, so it’s probably best to take it one region at a time. There is a Cruise America located right in Anchorage, so that is a great place to start, and a great launching point for several intriguing day trips near Fairbanks and other picturesque locations.
Anchorage is full of splendorous activities for you and your family without ever leaving the city limits. As an example, the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail makes for a great family excursion that starts right in the heart of downtown Anchorage. It is an 11-mile paved path that is just the ticket for biking, rollerblading, cross-country skiing or just leisurely strolling— all throughout the year. Along the path you will find the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) as well as Kincaid Park. If you are there during the summer, you may want to keep your eyes open over the Cook’s Inlet, as many have spotted Beluga whales. During the winter, you may spot moose in the park. This trail has been designated by many as the best attraction in Anchorage. It is a lot of fun mixed with sightseeing, and will fill your day with splendor and family togetherness.
For an adventure outside of the city, head your Cruise America RV rental north on the Parks Highway and go 98 miles to Talkeetna. This quaint community serves as the base camp for those brave mountain climbers who attempt to scale Mount McKinley, the tallest summit in North America. While driving towards Talkeetna, it would behoove travelers who appreciate breathtaking views to stop at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where they will get a magnificent shot of Mount McKinley, assuming the clouds cooperate by staying away. While in Talkeetna, you will have plenty of dining and shopping to keep you occupied. However, don’t miss the warmer weather season’s opportunities to get outside and enjoy a jet boat ride or float on a raft and snap photos of the abundant wildlife. If you are not in a hurry to get back to town, consider spending the night at one of the local RV Parks. Be sure to call ahead as you make your plans to assure that they are open, as some of these parks have seasonal hours.
Another adventure that will surpass the expectations of everyone in the family is to visit the towns of Wasilla and Palmer. In Wasilla you will find the Iditarod Sled Dog Race Headquarters and learn more about the world-famous 1,100-mile dog sled race to Nome, Alaska. You will see all kinds of race memorabilia, and will surely pick up some souvenirs along the way. You can even take a real dog sled ride. You can pay a visit to the kennel of an Iditarod musher and possibly meet some of the puppies that may one day become world champion sled racers. If you choose to visit the Historic Town Site on a Wednesday, you can feast on fresh produce at the farmer’s market (open June through mid-September)
Just ten miles down the road from Wasilla is the city of Palmer. Palmer has been a farming community since it was settled. You can learn all about its rich history by visiting the Palmer Museum of History and Art, as well as the Colony House Museum (the Colony House Museum is open during the summer on a regular schedule, but winter tours are available upon request). Each Friday, (from May to August) you can take part in the “Friday Fling” open-air market in downtown Palmer. You will be amazed at the high quality of the fruits and vegetables produced there.
These activities are great experiences while vacationing in a Cruise America RV rental, but they don’t even scratch the surface of things to do while exploring The Last Frontier state. There is much to see and do in the largest state in America, and an RV rental from the Anchorage Cruise America rental center is a good place to start. If you feel like jumping the gun and purchasing an RV, check out how a used RV for sale could be the right deal for you. If not, an RV rental in Alaska is a wonderful way to vacation.
