See the “Niagara of the South”

Cumberland Falls is the central feature of the park, and for good reason. It’s one of the largest waterfalls in the South. It’s 68 feet tall, 128 feet wide, and sure to thrill you and everyone in your group. 

Witness a “Moonbow”

You’ve heard of a rainbow, but what about a moonbow? This is an incredibly rare natural phenomenon that tends to occur near waterfalls. Put simply, this is a rainbow created by moonlight — instead of sunlight — passing through water droplets. And you can see one at Cumberland Falls State Resort Park.

Your best bet is to wait for a full moon and go to the falls when the moon is at its brightest. The moonbow should appear on the side of the sky that is opposite of the moon. Take a minute to breathe, look at the moonbow, and understand that you’re in the presence of one of nature’s rarest and most incredible sights.

At the gemstone flume, you can sift through rough material to look for colorful gemstones and even fossils. Keep in mind that this activity is closed during the winter.

Go Fishing

The Cumberland River is basically overflowing with fish, so if you’re an angler or just looking for a fun activity that might result in a tasty meal, try fishing when you get to Cumberland Falls State Resort Park. You may encounter one (or several) of the bass, panfish, and catfish that fill the river. Keep in mind that you will have to purchase a fishing license to legally fish in the park.

Logistics & Tips for Camping Near Cumberland Falls State Resort Park

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park closes to campers for winter from November 1 to March 14 (those dates may shift a little from year to year), so you will need to plan your visit for a warmer month. While you may be able to find an RV campsite near the park during the winter months, keep in mind that many of the activities available inside the park, such as swimming, also shut down during the winter.

When you are here, you will want to be selective about the precise dates you visit if you hope to witness the miraculous moonbow. The Kentucky State Parks website maintains a comprehensive list of dates on which you can spot the moonbow.

If you’re hoping to grab a bite at the delicious Riverview Restaurant in the park, keep in mind that it is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. The gift shop is open all year, but the snack shop is only open from April 1 to October 31.
