4 Epic California Surfing Beaches for RV Camping
ShareFor those who love to surf, there’s really only one thing better than a day surfing at the beach – and that’s hitting up the waves at multiple beaches over the course of a long, radical vacation. The nice thing about taking this kind of a trip in an RV rental is that you can camp right on the beach, giving yourself the full oceanside-living experience.
Get amped up for your next surfing trip by checking out this list of RV-friendly beaches in California.
San Onofre State Beach: San Diego County, California
A great surf spot located just three miles south of San Clemente, San Onofre State Beach is known for its “aloha” atmosphere. It’s one of the top five most-visited state parks in California, thanks in part to the frequent whale, dolphin and sea lion sightings just offshore. Full of good vibes and hometown surfers, it’s the perfect summertime surfing trip destination.
You can RV camp at two of the three main surfing locations in your RV rental. If amenities are your thing, definitely try to reserve a spot at the San Onofre - San Mateo Campground – it’s the only one with RV hookup sites (yay, electricity and water!), as well as a dump station, hot indoor showers, flush toilets and year-round camping. At the San Onofre Bluffs campsite, there are no RV hookups, but there is a dump station, cold showers and chemical toilets (so, yeah, let’s hear it for option #1).

Jalama Beach: County of Santa Barbara, California
Jalama Beach is a bit off the beaten path and can be a breath of fresh air for those who don’t like battling a crowd to catch their waves. Primarily visited by locals, visitors can enjoy the small-town feel and endless waves, which offer the best swells in fall and winter.
After an early-morning surf session, head to the general store for the world-famous Jalama burger. The full menu includes homemade clam chowder, chili verde and Aunt Ruth's Raw Apple Cake.
The campsite offers partial RV hookups, with electric only. But the overall campsite features picnic tables, a playground for the kids, flush toilets, hot showers and a dog-friendly policy, making it a great RV camping destination for you and your surfing crew.

San Elijo State Beach: Encinitas, California
Located just off of Pacific Coast Highway, San Elijo State Beach features great waves and oceanfront campsites. You’ll want to visit this spot in the fall for the best quality waves. If the beach gets too crowded during your trip, you can easily drive your RV rental to surrounding spots like Swami’s Beach or Cardiff Reef for the day.
We highly recommend relaxing by the fire pit after a great day of surfing – just make sure you buy your firewood locally, as firewood brought in from other areas is not permitted at any California state beach.

When you’re RV camping at the beach, it’s easy to catch the great surfing and beautiful light of dawn patrol.
Pismo State Beach: Oceano, California
In addition to amazing surfing, the great thing about this RV camping location is how close it is to local amenities. While you could always drive your RV rental to get around town, there is also a handy trolley service. And there are four restaurants within two blocks of the campground if you want to stretch your legs.
Check the surf report and forecast before you go with Surfline to get the most of your day out on the water. Then, add a little more adventure to your trip with some four-wheeling action – Pismo Beach is the only state beach in California that lets you rent and ride ATVs right on the beach.

The best surf season on Pismo State Beach is definitely the fall, when oily-glass, long-interval west swells grace the beach all day long.
